Course Objective: To adopt a proactive approach to stress management through education, training, identification and discussion of common and unique stressors in the ever changing field of Law Enforcement and the ways in which the individual, the family, the organization and the public are affected. In doing so, there should be a reduction in the harmful side effects which include but are not limited to attrition, unnecessary sick leave, low morale, substance abuse, liability and other physical and financial manifestations which are debilitating to the individual, the family and the organization. Individuals will also be better equipped when faced with critical incidents, knowing what to expect and how to counter any negative reactions. These objectives will be met through class discussions, role-playing, videos and other materials. Desired Learning Outcomes: That each individual will be better equipped with the tools necessary to recognize and deal with the everyday and unique stressors they may face. This will be achieved through the process of identification, evaluation and reduction.
Mind Armor for the Warrior and FamilyMIND ARMOR FOR THE WARRIOR AND FAMILY: AKA: For Better or Worse…..Nobody said anything about this law enforcement stuff!!Instructor: Susan Lewis Simons, M.S., B.C.E.T.S., D.A.A.E.T.S. Law enforcement can be one of the most challenging yet rewarding professions in our society. However, the challenges are growing daily. The men and women who are “called” to do this vital work are exposed to all the traumas our society has to offer and then expected to go home, merely shed the “garbage” at the end of the shift and peacefully co habitat and communicate with their spouses/significant others/families. In order to become successful and survive as “warriors”, they are forced to develop a persona that allows them to deal with daily insults, without taking them personally. They shut down emotionally and distance themselves from their families in order to protect them from the things they see on a daily basis and the “garbage” they are exposed to. For years, law enforcement training has attempted to condition officers to keep their personal and professional lives separate. Given the dynamics of this “lifestyle”, this type of training is no longer viable. With divorce statistics, domestic violence and many other negative reactions to this lifestyle skyrocketing and the long term impact these reactions can have on the individual’s health, economics, stress and breakdown of family values and issues, we must begin to provide new methods for officers and their families to cope with the many obstacles they encounter in this “lifestyle”. Course Objectives: This training will discuss the areas of the police lifestyle and how it impacts all the members of the police family, especially spouses, children and the officer him/herself. Topics will include communication, possible exposures and solutions for the family to include the ever popular topic, SEX! Through this innovative training, law enforcement couples will be better prepared for the many hurtles that are unique to this lifestyle. The results will ultimately be healthier individuals, marriages, and families. Whether you are Federal, State, or local law enforcement, STRESS KILLLS! Armor your mind and your family against this killer. This course provides critical information to combat the deadly stress that destroys marriages, careers and lives. Learn how to take control of this killer and take charge of your life.
You Won!! Now What?YOU WON!! Now What? Are You and/or Your Department Prepared?First Responders, Crisis Counselors and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) teams all know the value of pre-incident critical incident preparedness. Advanced education and preparation are invaluable when the objective as managers is to increase your resources and mitigate or minimize the negative impact of critical incidents on a department's most valuable commodity, PERSONNEL. Statistically, very few agencies have a thorough protocol/ guidelines for "post event" preparedness, thus adding substantially to the overall stress of the event. This is demonstrated in escalating suicide rates, skyrocketing divorce statistics, high attrition and over all poor health and low morale among employees in departments across the U.S. Many employees will experience the "adrenaline rush" when the event occurs. This stress reaction can create high energy but with that comes less focus which ultimately can increase the likelihood of negative reactions after the event. Despite our best intentions to prepare, many agencies do not have an adequate plan when it comes to dealing with their personnel and the aftermath of the event. This brings about the concept of working "on the fly" which many of us who work in the field of emergency services like to do. But enjoying working on the fly and being unprepared are two different things. In a time where trauma producing events come in many forms, ie: human pain and suffering, school tragedies, terrorism and natural disasters, we must optimize our preparation for the aftermath and its impact on all personnel. In this four hour training, we will discuss the options to insure adequate preparation for the "aftermath" and the positive outcome of doing so. Lesson Plan
